Philz Coffee, Berkeley CA

Coffee shops do not merely serve coffee. They create hubs for energy, meet ups, local pride, art and relaxation. They warm you up, invite you in, and represent sleek and cool.

When I returned to Berkeley, I spent months visiting coffee shops that smelled weird, charged high prices, seemed desolate and served bitter product. Six months ago, Ithiel introduced me to Philz Coffee, in North Berkeley on Shattuck Ave.

Philz isn't solely about coffee. It's about experience. Customers are greeted respectfully at the bar. The baristas are knowledgeable about the drinks and go the extra mile to show there thoughtfulness. They dare to ask how sweet you want your beverage- light, medium, or super? With honey or sugar? Plain or vanilla soy milk? When you receive your drink, they ask you to taste it right then and there, and make sure it's perfect.

Personally, I am not a coffee drinker, so I always order tea! My favorite is the Istanbul treat that is described as: Earthy, Spicy, and Fruity. Of course being vegan mama, Philz would not be featured with out vegan treats! To accompany your coffee choose from an array of organic vegan donuts made by Pepple's, a local donut farm in Emeryville or fresh vegan scones.

The vibe and decor of Philz is hip and homely, especially the lounge upstairs containing various size tables, chairs and couches. I enjoy perusing around witnessing the scenery and conversations and increasing my chances of meeting some working artist, friendly engineer student, feminist, family or other interesting person. Whether you live in the area or are passing through, Philz is a place to visit.
